DETROIT (CP) _ The chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment found himself in the barber's chair Sunday night.
Vince McMahon was shaved bald after his representative, Umaga, lost to Donald Trump's hired gun, Bobby Lashley, in a hair-versus-hair match at Wrestlemania 23, WWE's annual spectacle. Despite trying to escape after the match, McMahon eventually made good on his bet with Trump _ kicking and screaming all the while _ in the much-publicized Battle of the Billionaires.
With guest referee (Stone Cold) Steve Austin drinking a beer in delight, Lashley and Trump sheared McMahon before a Ford Field record crowd of 80,103, the second-largest audience in WWE history. Austin went crazy in his return to the WWE, laying Stone Cold Stunners on everyone in sight _ including Trump, who was left laid out in the ring.
Wrestlemania 23 also saw the beginning of The Undertaker's fifth championship reign, after the WWE legend beat Batista to capture the world heavyweight title. The victory improved The Undertaker's Wrestlemania record to 15-0.
In the final match of the night, John Cena retained the organizations other major title, the WWE championship, with a submission victory over crowd favourite Shawn Michaels.
Trump is no stranger to wrestling's ultimate spectacle. Wrestlemania 4 was held March 27, 1988 at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, when Randy (Macho Man) Savage won the WWE championship in a tournament final over Ted (Million Dollar Man) DiBiase. The WWE returned to the venue for Wrestlemania 5 on April 2, 1989, when Savage dropped the title to Hulk Hogan in the main event.
The hair-versus-hair match saw plenty of interference, including Shane McMahon bolting to ringside to aid his father. After Austin was knocked out of the ring, Shane climbed to the top rope and laid out Lashley with a Coast-2-Coast _ a missile dropkick spanning the length of the ring .
But Umaga couldn't finish the job, and Austin returned to take out Shane before hitting a Stunner on Umaga as Trump ran around the ring and clocked a stunned Vince. Lashley then hit Umaga with a spear and covered the Samoan Bulldozer for the three-count.
Michaels and Cena closed the extravaganza with an entertaining match that sent the audience home satisfied with the performances, but largely disappointed that the champ kept his strap.
Cena entered the stadium in a Ford Mustang, smashing through a giant piece of glass, with the jacked crowd greeting him with lusty boos. By comparison, Michaels played to the fans in the moments before the match, sitting on the top turnbuckle and offering a genteel wave.
Low-risk manoeuvres dominated the opening 10 minutes before Cena exerted his strength advantage over Michaels, bloodying his face. Michaels returned the favour moments later, busting Cena's head wide open with a piledriver on the steel ring steps.
The two exchanged several near-falls before Cena placed Michaels in the STFU, a crossover toehold sleeper. Michaels, who had battled out of the STFU minutes earlier, tapped out in the centre of the ring.
After the match, Cena gave Michaels a salute as his beaten opponent stumbled to the locker-room.
Ensconced in a blanket of fog and flame, The Undertaker made a memorable entrance to wild cheers. The 300-pound Deadman carried that momentum into the slugfest, nailing Batista with kicks, punches and even a little old school _ Undertaker's signature clothesline from the middle of the top rope.
Batista turned the tables _ literally _ by smashing The Undertaker through a ringside announce table with a vicious powerslam. That led to a number of near-falls, including The Undertaker kicking out just in time after taking a sit-down power bomb.
After Batista failed to execute a second power bomb, The Undertaker fired him into the turnbuckle before finishing off the now-former champion with a tombstone piledriver, beginning his fifth WWE title reign.
In the hours leading up to the event, entrances at Ford Field were jammed with enthusiastic fans from around North America. Many wore replica championship belts, while others dressed like their favourite superstars.
One fan, holding a championship belt and clad in a wild orange shirt reminiscent of Ricky from Trailer Park Boys, cut a hilarious impromptu promo that stopped onlookers in their tracks.
``I'm hot all around the world,'' the man said. ``From Antarctica to Asia!''
The festivities got off to an ear-splitting start with a dazzling pyrotechnic display, and the fireworks continued into the show-opening Ladder in the Bank match. Loud-mouthed young star Mr. Kennedy won the contest, climbing a ladder to secure a briefcase suspended 15 feet above the ring.
With the win, Kennedy earned himself a shot at one of either the WWE, world or ECW heavyweight championships within the next 12 months. He was the last man standing in the 19-minute affair that saw all eight participants battered and bruised. Adam Copeland of Orangeville, Ont., a.k.a. Edge, got the worst of it, ending up on the receiving end of a sit-down splash from Jeff Hardy from a 15-foot ladder.
Medics tended to both Edge and Hardy at ringside, but neither suffered any serious injuries.
Chris Benoit, who grew up in Edmonton, retained the United States championship with a decisive victory over MVP. Benoit, who enters the ring to the song ``Whatever'' by Toronto band Our Lady Peace, used a slew of German suplexes to weaken MVP before ending things with a flying headbutt from the top rope.
The ECW Originals _ Rob Van Dam, Sabu, The Sandman and Tommy Dreamer _ posted a convincing win over The New Breed _ Marcus Cor Von, Elijah Burke, Kevin Thorn and Matt Stryker. Van Dam earned the victory, hitting Stryker with a Five-Star frog splash.
Melina defended her women's championship with a four-minute victory over Playboy cover girl Ashley Massaro in a lumberjill match. The contest ended with a dozen scantily-clad women exchanging punches and kicks in the ring.
In the dud match of the night, The Great Khali laid a beating on Kane. The seven-foot-three 420-pound Khali, who played a football player in the movie The Longest Yard, obviously saved his best performance for the silver screen.
The two men plodded through the match until Khali ended things with a two-handed chokeslam. Khali then used a chain brought into the ring by Kane to choke him out, prolonging the agony for both his opponent and the bored fans.
Prior to the pay-per-view, WWE legend Ric Flair teamed with Carlito to beat cruiserweight champion Chavo Guerrero and Gregory Helms in a tag-team lumberjack match.
