VERMILION, Alta. (CP) _ Vermilion is honouring Beckie Scott, the Olympic gold
medallist who helped put her Alberta hometown on the map.
The cross-country skiing star will be feted in a retirement and tribute
ceremony Thursday at Lakeland College.
Scott, who won gold at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics and silver in 2006 in
Turin, grew up skiing in Vermilion en route to rewriting the record books as
Canada's most decorated cross-country athlete.
Vermilion is a town of just over 4,000, located about a two-hour drive east
of Edmonton.
Major Judy Woyewitka, Vermilion-Lloydminster MLA Lloyd Snelgrove and
Vegreville-Wainwright MP Leon Benoit, along with Canadian cross-country coach
Dave Wood, will be at the ceremony, which will be hosted by the CBC's Scott
Russell.
Scott is Canada's representative on the World Anti-Doping Agency's athlete
committee, and is a member of the International Olympic Committee's athletes
commission.
