Michael Phelps breaks world record in 200 metre butterfly

American swimmer Michael Phelps broke his own world record in the 200-metre butterfly at the Pan Pacific Swim Championships Thursday night.

Phelps swam the race in one minute, 53.80 seconds. That breaks the marks of 1:53.93 he set at the 2003 world championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Phelps had to battle off a charge from Japan's Ryulchl Shibata to win the race.
