Tom Johnson has been named the head coach of Canada's
swim team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The veteran coach has an extensive resume. He's been named to
Canada's coaching staff for seven Olympic Games, nine world
championships and eight Commonwealth Games and nationally his clubs
have won 15 overall national team titles and 21 Canadian
Interuniversity Sport titles.
``Tom has shown great leadership as head coach of the 2007 world
championship team,'' Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and national coach for
Swimming Canada, said in a statement. ``His experience and
involvement within Canadian swimming will have a positive influence
on the swimmers and coaches headed to Beijing.''
Johnson is the head coach of the National Swimming Centre in
Vancouver, coaching Brent Hayden of Mission, B.C., to a gold medal
in the 100-metre freestyle at the 2007 world championships in
Melbourne, Australia. Hayden was also part of the 4x200 freestyle
relay team that won bronze in Melbourne.
The Olympic swim team trials are April 1-6 in Montreal.
