Adam van Koeverden of Oakville, Ont., won
the overall men's kayak title with victories this weekend in the K-1
500 and 1,000 metres at the final stop on the World Cup canoe and
kayak circuit.
Canada won 10 medals in total over the weekend.
Van Koeverden, the Olympic champion in the K-1 500 and third at
the Athens Games in the 1,000, won both races by more than a full
second to take the season title.
He also helped Canada to three medals in the K-4 events with
Andrew Willows of Gananoque, Ont., Ryan Cuthbert of Carleton Place,
Ont., and Steve Jorens of Richmond Hill, Ont. They were second in
the 200 metres, and third in both the 500 and 1,000 metres.
``It was nice to rebound from a disappointing world
championships,'' said Van Koeverden, who posted two fourth places at
the worlds two weeks ago in Hungary. ``It was also was exciting to
win a couple of medals with the K4 guys.''
In the men's K-2 1,000, Jorens and Cuthbert won silver with a
strong surge at the finish and nearly caught the first place crew
from Belarus.
``It was a great finish we just left it a little bit late and ran
out of room to reel them in,'' said Jorens.
Mark OIdershaw of Burlington, Ont., took third place in the
season's canoe World Cup standings after third place finishes this
weekend in the C-1 500 and 1,000.
Other medallists were Tamas Buday and Attila Buday of
Mississauga, Ont., with silver in the C-2 1,000 and bronze in the
C-2 500. They won silver in the 1,000 at the worlds.
Karen Furneaux of Waverley, N.S., did not compete this weekend
but hung on to third place overall in the women's kayak standings.
``It was a great season and we are extremely pleased with the
performances of our athletes,'' said Graham Barton, high performance
director for the CanoeKayak Canada. ``Following our world
championships and World Cup performances we look positioned for a
podium run in at least six Olympic events.''
