ETON, England (CP) _ Canada's women's eight boat is on to the final at the world rowing championships, while the men's eight and men's pair crews have advanced to the semifinals.
The women's eight finished second in its repechage race Thursday in six minutes, 10.26 seconds, despite losing time when Sabrina Kolker of West Vancouver slipped off her seat in the early part of the race.
``We were down, but we edged back,'' said Kolker. ``It was in the first 500 metres, but I just got back and stayed as calm as possible.''
Sarah Bonikowsky of Orangeville, Ont., sits in the bow seat behind Kolker, and said there were some tense moments in the boat.
``Once she got back on her seat, we were relaxed,'' said Bonikowsky. ``It's difficult to say what's the best thing to do in that situation, but I had no choice but to relax.''
Germany won the repechage in 6:05.57, with the first two moving on to the final.
The other members of the women's eight are Heather Mandoli of Kelowna, B.C., Andreanne Morin of Montreal, Romina Stefancic and Kaylan Vander Schilden of Victoria, Katie Reynolds of St. John, N.B., Toronto's Ashley Brzozowicz of Toronto, and coxswain Lesley Thompson-Willie of London, Ont.
The men's eight won its repechage in 5:33.84, to advance to the semis.
``We established an early lead, we got out and we were in synch. It felt really good,'' said Andrew Ireland of Hamilton. ``It was more refined than in the heat and we feel we still have another gear.''
The rest of the men's eight crew is Robert Weitemeyer of Coquitlam, B.C., Pete Dembicki of West Vancouver, Gabe Bergen of 100 Mile House, B.C., Chris Jarvis of St. Catharines, Ont., Adam Kreek of London, Ont., Jamie Faris of Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., Kristopher McDaniel of Cobble Hill, B.C. and Brian Price of Belleville, Ont.
In the men's pair, Kevin Light of Sidney, B.C., and Malcolm Howard of Victoria finished third in their repechage behind Great Britain and Australia to advance to the semis.
The Canadian men's four of Scott Frandsen of Kelowna, B.C., Kyle Hamilton of Richmond, B.C., Ben Rutledge of Cranbrook, B.C., and Barney Williams of Salt Spring Island, B.C., finished fourth in their repechage and will row in the B final. Great Britain won, followed by Germany and Slovenia.
Jeff Bujas of Grimsby, Ont., was fifth in the lightweight men's single semifinal and failed to advance.
