ETON, England (CP) _ Two Canadian boats survived repechage races
Tuesday to move on at the world rowing championships.
The men's four of Scott Frandsen of Kelowna, B.C., Kyle Hamilton
of Richmond, B.C., Ben Rutledge of Cranbrook, B.C. and Barney
Williams of Salt Spring Island, B.C., won their repechage in six
minutes 1.12 seconds to move into the semifinals.
``We expected to win today and win well,'' said Canadian men's
coach Mike Spracklen. ``It's a different psychology when you are
defending rather than attacking, but the four rowed well. The
standard is high and the semi will be tough, we'll just have to wait
and see the draw.''
As defending world champion, the British men's four is the
favourite. The British boat won its heat Sunday.
Jeff Bujas of Grimsby, Ont., won his lightweight men's single
repechage in 7:12.50.
``I was more aggressive in my race today,'' said Bujas. ``I was
inspired by yesterday's lightweight men's double and lightweight
men's four races _ just seeing the way they attacked all the way
down the course was very exciting.''
The men's coxed pair of Derek O'Farrell of Unionville, Ont., and
James Andrew Byrnes of Toronto failed to advance after finishing
fifth in 7:08.25.
The Canadian women's four _ Lindsay Forget of Aurora, Ont.,
Nathalie Maurer and Krista Guloien of Vancouver, and Cristin McCarty
of Saskatoon, Sask. _ was also fifth today in its repechage in
6:53.55.
