Fred Winters of North Vancouver had 16 kills, two
stuff blocks and a service ace to help Canada advance to the
gold-medal match with a 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 win over sixth-ranked
Argentina at the Anton Furlani International Cup volleyball
tournament Friday.
Paul Duerden of London, Ont., added 10 kills and one stuff block.
Argentina's Lucas Chavez scored a team-high nine points on eight
kills and a service ace.
Canada's first team goes on to play for the gold in a rematch
against Tunisia Saturday.
``It was a good win for us tonight, a real team effort,'' said
Canadian head coach Glenn Hoag. ``Paul (Duerden) emerged from a long
comeback, Mike (Munday) played very well and Freddie (Winters)
showed up to play tonight. He is becoming a true leader on this
team.''
In the first match of the day, Canada's second team lost 25-23,
25-20, 25-18 to Tunisia, which defeated Canada's first team
Thursday.
Edmonton's Nicholas Cundy had 12 kills and a service ace while
Alex Gaumont Casias of Marieville, Que., added 11 kills and a stuff
block.
Hosni Karamosly once again led the Tunisians, with 13 kills,
while Mohamed Bin Slimane added nine kills and four stuff blocks.
