BAYAGUANA, Dominican Republic (CP) _ Canada advanced to the
semifinal of the North American men's youth volleyball championships
Friday with a three-set win over the Dominican Republic.
Canada won the quarter-final mach 3-0 with set scores of 25-21,
25-20 and 25-19. The Canadians face Puerto Rico in Saturday's
semifinal round.
Cuba and the United States meet in the other semifinal.
Gord Perrin of Creston, B.C., had 13 kills for Canada, while
Stefan Savoie of Winnipeg had 12 points on eight kills and four
stuff blocks.
``It was a good win for us tonight in front of the hometown
crowd,'' said Canadian head coach Russ Paddock. ``We tried our best
to tune it out and just stuck to our game plan. We played well when
it counted.''
The top two teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2007
men's youth world championships.
