BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) _ Vera Zvonareva won her first title in 16 months, a 7-6 (12), 7-6 (5) victory over Jamea Jackson at the DFS Classic on Sunday.
Zvonareva, who helped lead Russia to victory in the Fed Cup 18 months ago, showed flashes of her former top-10 ranking. Jackson had advanced to the final of this grass-court Wimbledon warmup by beating four seeded players, including two-time champion Maria Sharapova.
``It's really great to have won this,'' Zvonareva said. ``I'm much closer now to the form I had when my ranking was high.''
The Russian saved four set points in a 26-point, first-set tiebreaker before Jackson saved a set point in the 12th game, then four more in the tiebreaker.
``I always thought I could win it, but had just got a little defensive,'' she said. ``I just went for my shots a bit more and that changed things around.''
Jackson couldn't break the Russian's serve in the seventh game. The point would have given the American a 5-3 lead.
Zvonareva won five successive games to lead 5-4 before surviving a rally in the tenth point of the second set tie-break. She finished without realizing victory was hers.
``I was just telling myself to take it point by point, so I wasn't sure that it had finished,'' she grinned. ``But I know now, and now I am also sure that I can do well at Wimbledon.''
