Richard Gasquet defeated Tomas Berdych at US Rogers Cup tennis tournament
TORONTO (CP) _ Richard Gasquet of France defeated No. 13 seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the $2.45-million US Rogers Cup tennis tournament.
Gasquet needed only 66 minutes to complete the 6-4, 6-1 victory. He will next play the winner of the quarter-final between No. 14 seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland and Andy Murray of Britain.
``I served well and I returned well and I think against him it's important because he's really aggressive,'' Gasquet said.
The 20-year-old Frenchman won 22 of 24 points (92 per cent) on first serve to only 55 per cent for Berdych.
World No. 1 and top seed Roger Federer of Switzerland was scheduled to play Xavier Malisse of Belgium later Thursday. Also, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile was to meet Jose Acasuso of Argentina.
In doubles, Toronto's Daniel Nestor and partner Mark Knowles of the Bahamas, the No. 4 seeds, were to take on Simon Aspelin of Sweden and Todd Perry of Australia.
