BANGALORE, India (AP) _ Top-seeded Sania Mirza lost before her home fans Wednesday, unable to handle her opponent's off-speed game in a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 defeat to France's Camille Pin in the second round of the Bangalore Open.
Second-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel also was ousted, beaten in the first round by Italy's Maria Elena Camerin 6-4, 6-2. Peer was coming off a victory in Thailand on Sunday.
With the exit of Mirza and Peer, six of the eight seeded players have been eliminated. The only survivors are sixth-seeded Jelena Kostanic of Croatia and third-seeded Mara Santangelo of Italy. Kostanic defeated Daniela Kix of Austria 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Joining Pin the quarter-finals were Vania King of the United States, who defeated Nicole Pratt of Australia 6-0, 6-1; Melinda Czink of Hungary, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine; and Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine, who downed Anastassia Rodionova of Russia 6-2, 6-1.
