Top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo pulled out of the Porsche Grand Prix on Thursday because of a right shoulder injury.
The French star withdrew shortly before she was to play her first match of the tournament against Michaella Krajicek in the second round.
``I felt it first at the end of practice on Monday and I was hoping that it was nothing serious,'' Mauresmo said. ``When I was warming up today I felt the pain again and I think I made the right decision not to play. It's disappointing, but that's the way it is.''
American Lisa Raymond has taken Mauresmo's place in the draw as the highest-ranked loser in qualifying.
Mauresmo said she didn't know if she would be fit to play at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow next week.
Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport, Serena and Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic also pulled out of the tournament with injuries.
Mauresmo is seeking to finish the year as No. 1 in the world for the first time in her nine-year career.
