Second-seeded Patty Schnyder rolled past Elise Tamaela of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-1 Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the Wismilak International tennis tournament.
American No. 3 Lindsay Davenport booked her spot in the final eight with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Japan's Akiko Morigami.
Davenport was never in trouble against Morigami, but the defending champion missed several first serves that allowed her opponent to draw her into some testing rallies.
``I was getting into trouble when I had to hit second serves. Obviously I still won, but I would like to have served better and I'll work on that tomorrow,'' she said.
Schnyder had a much harder time than the score suggests before ending the challenge of Tamaela, who drew crowd support for her Indonesian ancestry as well as her spirited performance.
``I think it was a very high level match and I'm really happy with the way I played,'' said Schnyder.
French No. 8 Severine Bremond ground out a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over hometown favourite Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia to set up a quarter-finals matchup with top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Russian Kuznetsova cruised into the final eight with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Japan's Erika Takao on Wednesday.
In other second round play Russian Olga Poutchkova overcame Andreja Klepac of Slovenia 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals, where she'll face French No. 6 Marion Bartoli.
Davenport will meet Hana Sromova of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals, while Switzerland's Schnyder plays Hungary's Melinda Czink.
Security at the US$225,000 Wismilak International has been heightened after Bali was hit by two terrorist attacks in the last four years, together killing 242 people.
