DEN BOSCH, Netherlands (AP) _ Defending champion Mario Ancic of Croatia beat Pakistani qualifier Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi 7-6 (3), 6-7 (0), 7-5 in the first round of the Ordina Open on Monday.

Women's titleholder Klara Koukalova of the Czech Republic also won her opener, ousting qualifier Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

Ancic fired 18 aces against Qureshi, who dropped serve only twice.

Ancic won his first ATP title in the 2005 Den Bosch then reached the Wimbledon semifinals. He's come off an excellent clay-court season in which he reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and Rome Masters, and the semifinals of the Hamburg Masters. He'll next face Dutch wild card Raemon Sluiter, a Den Bosch quarter-finalist twice in the last three years.

France's Julien Benneteau, another French Open quarter-finalist, defeated Australian qualifier Joseph Sirianni 6-4, 6-4, and South Korea's Lee Hyung-taik upset former Australian Open finalist Arnaud Clement 6-4, 6-4.

Czech Tomas Berdych withdrew with a left leg injury on Monday, a day after losing the Halle final to Roger Federer. Berdych was set to be seeded fourth. His place in the main draw went to Russian Mischa Zverev. Previously, Ivan Ljubicic withdrew with a back injury and Nicolas Kiefer pulled out with a wrist injury.

Unseeded Koukalova's reward was a second-round match with Dutch teenager Michaella Krajicek, who upset third-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta 7-5, 6-3. Krajicek passed the first round after three straight failures in Den Bosch.

Two more seeds were beaten; No. 4 Maria Kirilenko to Argentina's Paola Suarez 6-4, 6-3, and No. 6 Anabel Medina Garrigues to Poland's Marta Domachowska 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Eleni Daniilidou, the 2002 champ, defeated Zheng Jie of China 6-4, 6-1, and Elena Vesnina won on her Den Bosch debut to set up a meeting with top-seeded Russian countrywoman Elena Dementieva.
