A U.S. Open champion at age 20 back in 2000, Safin now is unseeded _ undaunted.
``Every time you come back, once you win it, you want to get closer to the final,'' he said after his 6-3, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 7-6 (6) win in the second round. ``You don't really pay attention to the first couple of rounds. You just want to get there somehow.''
