Top-seeded Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia made short work of America's Kevin Kim on Thursday, coasting to a 6-3, 6-4 win and a spot in the China Open quarter-finals.
Ljubicic, the world No. 5, slammed 15 aces and won 31 of 35 points on first serve en route to the victory.
``I served well,'' Ljubicic said.``My baseline play wasn't at top, but I tried to play aggressively, give my opponent pressure and force mistakes.''
Ljubicic will face eighth-seeded Lee Hyung-taik in the final eight after the South Korean outlasted German Michael Berrer for a hard fought 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) win.
Lee rallied from a 1-4 deficit in the third-set tiebreaker.
``There was a time when it was possible that I might lose,'' Lee said. ``I told myself not to give up and I could win, so I'm happy about the result.''
In other second-round matches Thursday, second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia defeated Luka Gregorc of Slovenia 7-6, 6-2, and sixth-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand overpowered Satoshi Iwabuchi of Japan 6-3, 6-1.
