Canada will host Colombia in the first round of next year's Davis Cup, in the team's quest to regain World Group status.
The draw Thursday has Canada playing Colombia, Feb. 9-11, 2007 at home. Team nominations and the venue will be announced at a later date. The winner travels to Brazil in April to play for a chance to rejoin the prestigious 16-team World Group.
``We have enjoyed great success playing in front of a home crowd in recent history,'' Canadian captain Martin Laurendeau said in a release. ``Playing a Davis Cup tie in Canada is an emotional experience for any player, coach or staff member. Our men are having a strong year on the court and I look forward to a terrific tie in February against an improving Colombia squad.''
Canada and Colombia have met seven times in Davis Cup play, with Canada holding a 4-3 edge in head-to-head competition. All three Colombian wins came on clay. The most recent meeting was in 1999 during a similar Americas Group 1 tie, which Colombia won 3-2 at home.
Switzerland will host Spain in the first round of the World Group, setting the stage for another duel between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
The draw has the United States travelling to the Czech Republic for the first-round matches of the World Group played Feb. 9-11.
Nadal holds a 6-2 record against the top-ranked Federer, including a win in this year's French Open final. In their last meeting, Federer beat Nadal to win the Wimbledon title.
In other matches, Australia travels to Belgium, Chile hosts Russia and Argentina plays in Austria. Croatia will travel to Germany, France hosts Romania and Sweden travels to Belarus.
Argentina will play Russia in this year's final Dec. 1-3 in Russia.
