Tomas Berdych served 23 aces Thursday to beat sixth-seeded American Andy Roddick 7-6 (7), 6-3 in the third round of the Madrid Masters.
The 11th-ranked Czech had the only break of the match in the sixth game of the second set, hitting a winner after Roddick had received treatment on his left ankle.
Marat Safin beat Kristof Vliegen 6-3, 6-2, while 10th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez advanced after Joachim Johansson withdrew with a throat infection.
Earlier, American Robby Ginepri topped seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-3, 7-6 (3) and will play either top-ranked Roger Federer or Robin Soderling in the next round.
