Defending champion Ivan Ljubicic of
Croatia will play Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the final of the
BA-CA Tennis Trophy on Sunday.
Ljubicic cruised past Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 6-4, and Gonzalez upset
third-seeded Andy Roddick 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in Saturday's
semifinals.
It will be Gonzalez' first final this season, while Ljubicic has
won two of four.
Roddick struggled to find his rhythm, while Gonzalez dominated
the first set from the baseline and served six aces. The American
lost his serve once, but saved four more break points.
In the second set, Roddick raised his first-serve percentage from
59 to 80 and broke Gonzalez at 3-2.
Neither player lost serve in the third set and Gonzalez won on
his third match point in the tiebreaker.
``I am not surprised that I beat Andy, because I played well all
week,'' said Gonzalez, who had lost six of his previous eight
matches against Roddick. ``The match was very much in balance, we
each had just one break of serve. I returned very well, which was
the key factor.''
Ljubicic broke Hrbaty three times in the first set and gave up
only three points on his own serve.
The second set continued on serve until Hrbaty double-faulted
twice while trailing 5-4 and Ljubicic converted his second match
point.
``It feels great to beat good players like Dominik so easily,''
Ljubicic said. ``I am now playing even better than last year in
Vienna. I am anxious to defend my title, but the final will be very
tough. Fernando is in top form, having beaten (David) Nalbandian and
Roddick.''
