Carolyn Russell of Winnipeg earned a 7-9, 9-5, 9-2, 9-0 victory over Amnah El Trablosy Tuesday, but Canada lost 2-1 to second-seed Egypt on the last day of round-robin play at the women's world team squash championships.
The Canadians head to the consolation round to battle for ninth place.
After Russell's victory, Egypt tied the match at 1-1 as Omneya Abdel Kawy, ranked ninth in the world, beat Runa Reta of Ottawa 9-6, 9-5, 9-2. World number-15 Engy Kheirallah won the deciding match 9-3, 9-0, 9-3 over Melanie Jans of Vancouver.
Canada, seeded seventh, ends the round robin portion of the tournament at 1-2 for third spot in Pool B. Egypt won the pool at 3-0, followed by France at 2-1 while Spain was 0-3. Canada was in a must-win situation Tuesday against the powerful Egyptians.
``It was a tall order but Runa and Melanie both played fabulous,'' said Russell. ``The Egyptians are very tough players. They play a very physical and aggressive game. There's no reason we can't win the consolation round and we plan to work very hard to achieve that.''
In pool D action, the Netherlands completed the round robin undefeated beating Australia 3-0. South Africa edged Germany 2-1. The Netherlands and South Africa advance to the quarter-finals. Australia, the defending champions, go to consolation.
A pool and C pool play was completed later Tuesday.
Canada plays Germany on Thursday.
