Canadians Razik and Reta fall in first round play at Hong Kong Open squash

Shahier Razik of Toronto and Ottawa's Runa Reta both lost their first-round matches Wednesday at the Hong Kong Open squash championships.

The unseeded Razik dropped a 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6 decision to No. 8 seed Lee Beachill of England. Dominique Lloyd-Walter of England, the No. 16 seed, defeated Reta _ who entered the main draw as a qualifier _ 9-3, 9-2, 10-8.

There were a handful of upsets on the opening day of the US$120,000 Super Series platinum tournament.

Ramy Ashour of Egypt downed 10th-seeded John White of Scotland 11-9, 11-9, 11-8; England's Peter Barker surprised No. 13 seed Ong Beng Hee of Malaysia 11-8, 10-11, 11-8, 11-7; and Mohammed Abbas of Egypt defeated No. 14 seed Olli Tuominen of Finland 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.
