Romario, Miami FC ousted from USL playoffs after loss to Vancouver

Former Brazil World Cup star Romario's stay with Miami FC may have ended Sunday night when the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated his team 2-0 in a United Soccer League playoff match.

Vancouver won the two-match aggregate series, 6-1. It took Game 1 of the series Friday night in Vancouver 4-1.

Romario signed a one-year contract with the expansion club earlier this year. Now, the star who helped lead Brazil to the 1994 World Cup title, reportedly will return to his native country and conclude his quest for a career milestone of 1,000 goals.

The 40-year-old Romario scored a league-leading 19 goals in his first USL season. Romario, whose travels include stops with noted clubs FC Barcelona, Valencia, PSV Eindhoven and Vasco de Gama, now has 983 career goals.

As he walked off the field following Sunday's loss, Romario refused to discuss his future playing plans.

``It was a positive and good first season for the team,'' Romario said. ``The players showed that they can play at a high level.''

Romario's teammates appreciated the opportunity of playing alongside one of the worlds most recognized players.

``Romario brought a lot of experience,'' Miami midfielder Diego Walsh said. ``He has helped the team out a lot.''

``It was definitely a positive season because the team came together in six months to make the playoffs with players that had never played at the professional level.''

Eduardo Sebrango and Victoria's Martin Nash _ the brother of two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash _ scored goals in stoppage time of the first half and the 64th minute, respectively to lead the Whitecaps on Sunday. The victory advances Vancouver to the league semifinals against the Montreal Impact starting Friday night.
