The Kansas City Wizards of Major
League Soccer were sold to a six-person investment group led by
Cerner Corp. executives Neal Patterson and Cliff Illig.
The deal was announced Thursday, three days after the Overland
Park City Council voted to put a $75 million US soccer complex on
the November ballot.
The new owners, who will assume operations Friday, hope to have
the Wizards' stadium built in that suburban Kansas City complex.
The Wizards now play in Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Kansas
City Chiefs. But extensive renovations planned for the stadium would
have forced the Wizards to look for a new home anyway. MLS is urging
that its teams play in stadiums built specifically for soccer.
