Jacob Peterson scored from in close in the 88th
minute Saturday night to give Colorado a 3-3 tie with the Houston
Dynamo and clinch a playoff spot for the Rapids.
Thiago Martins had two goals for Colorado, which finished the
regular season with a 11-13-8 record to secure the final playoff
spot in the Western Conference. Craig Waibel had two goals and Paul
Dalglish one for Houston.
The tie gave Houston a 2-0-1 record in games against Colorado
this season. The Dynamo end the regular season with an 11-8-13
record.
The Dynamo's Canadian contingent of Toronto striker Dwayne De
Rosario, defender Adrian Serioux of Toronto and goalkeeper Pat
Onstad of Vancouver all started and were active.
De Rosario had three shots on goal and committed two fouls, while
Serioux suffered a cut to his chin in the first half, but re-entered
the game minutes later.
Onstad faced seven shots and made two saves, while allowing all
three Rapids goals.
Houston had already secured a playoff spot and is awaiting an
opponent and game date. Brian Ching, who co-leads Houston in scoring
with De Rosario at 11 goals, had four goals against Colorado in the
first game of the season, but was held out by coaches Saturday to
give him a rest.
Dynamo started the scoring Saturday when Waibel scored off a
corner kick in the first minute of the game. Brad Davis made the
corner kick that glanced off Alejandro Moreno and both got an
assist.
Martins tied it in the 21st minute on a goal from 15 yards out.
In the 43rd minute, Moreno passed the ball out of a group of
Rapids and Dalglish took it and scored from 12 yards out for a 2-1
lead.
Martins scored again in the 54th minute on an assist from Terry
Cooke. It was Cooke's league-leading 12th assist. Waibel put Houston
up again in the 73rd minute.
It was the first time Colorado had scored more than one goal in a
game since beating Columbus 2-1 July 20.
