Villarreal to sign Colo Colo's Fernandez

Villarreal has agreed to sign Matias Fernandez from Chilean club Colo Colo.

Villarreal said Wednesday that the transfer of the 20-year-old Chile midfielder will soon be completed.

Fernandez will join Villarreal on Jan. 1, enabling him to continue to play for Colo Colo in Chile's Clausura championship and the South American Cup.

The Argentine-born Fernandez will help Villarreal cover the absence of former France midfielder Robert Pires, who seriously injured his knee before the start of the season.

Villarreal, which reached the Champions League semifinals last season, is 10th in the league with eight points from six games.
