Real Madrid's appeal of Ronaldo's one game suspension denied

Real Madrid lost its appeal against Ronaldo's one-game suspension on Thursday, likely ruling the Brazil striker out of this weekend's match against FC Barcelona.

The Spanish soccer federation's appeals committee said it wouldn't withdraw the yellow card Ronaldo received for an 82nd-minute foul during his team's 1-0 defeat at Getafe last Saturday.

Eight minutes later, Ronaldo was sent off for the first time in the Spanish league after receiving a second caution for making a remark to the referee.

The decision seems to have denied the 30-year-old Ronaldo the chance to face his former club in Sunday's game at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. He scored 34 league goals with Barcelona in the 1996-97 season.

However, Madrid still has the option of taking its appeal to the state body, the Spanish Council for Sports Discipline.

Madrid is fifth in the league with 11 points, five behind leader and defending champion Barcelona.
