Ronaldinho scored his 50th and 51st Spanish
league goals on Saturday to help FC Barcelona beat Villarreal 4-0
and establish a four-point lead in the standings.
The Brazilian opened the scoring with a 35th-minute penalty and
rounded off the defending champions' victory with a spectacular
overhead kick just before the end for his league-leading 10th goal
this season.
Striker Eidur Gudjohnsen and midfielder Andres Iniesta also
scored.
``It was the goal I dreamed about when I was young,'' Ronaldinho
said of his second goal. ``What worried me most was that I was
offside. Then when I controlled the ball I saw it was at a perfect
height to try an overhead kick.''
Barcelona was missing five injured players, including forwards
Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi. It has gained five wins and a draw
from its opening six league games at Camp Nou stadium this season.
In Saturday's late game, Real Sociedad remained winless this
season by drawing 1-1 at Atletico Madrid.
Barcelona has 29 points, followed by Sevilla with 25 and Real
Madrid with 23. Zaragoza follows with 22, one more than Atletico.
On Sunday, Madrid visits Valencia and Sevilla plays at Athletic
Bilbao.
Also, it's: Real Betis vs. Espanyol; Getafe vs. Levante;
Gimnastic Tarragona vs. Mallorca; Celta Vigo vs. Zaragoza; Osasuna
vs. Deportivo La Coruna; and Racing Santander vs. Recreativo Huelva.
Barcelona's victory was preceded by sombre music which marked the
death this week of Francesc Mitjans, the architect of Camp Nou.
Ronaldinho, who was presented with the FIFPro award for player of
the year the previous day, netted his fifth penalty of the season to
reach a half century of league goals when Villarreal defender Pascal
Cygan was whistled for holding Gudjohnsen.
The forward fired the ball just out of reach of diving goalkeeper
Mariano Barbosa and then celebrated by holding up five fingers with
his left hand and making an ``0'' shape with his right.
Gudjohnsen, a former Chelsea striker, grabbed his fifth league
goal in his debut season in Spain when he rose to head home a cross
by Iniesta in the 55th.
Iniesta added Barcelona's third 15 minutes later with a scissors
kick off Ludovic Giuly's pass. Iniesta also scored in Wednesday's
2-0 win over Levski Sofia that kept alive the European champion's
hopes of reaching the second round of the Champions League.
Ronaldinho delivered the fourth goal in the 88th.
Off balance with his back to goal, the Brazilian controlled
substitute Xavi Hernandez's floated pass with his chest and then
jumped to execute his overhead shot.
Villarreal, without midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme and five other
players, stayed ninth with 18 points.
Sociedad, which has been in the first division since 1967,
appeared to be heading for its first victory of the season at
Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium.
The Basque team took a lead in the 24th minute when midfielder
Gari Uranga dived to head home a cross by Jesuli Mora, who joined
the club this week from Sevilla.
But Sociedad were unlucky in the 77th minute when goalkeeper
Claudio Bravo slipped as he came out to meet a cross. The ball hit
defender Ion Ansotegi on the chest and bounced into the goal for
Atletico's equalizer.
Sociedad moved up to 19th place with five points from 12 games.
However, it will return to the bottom of the standings Sunday if
Gimnastic gains at least a point against Mallorca.
