Hugo Sanchez will take over as coach of Necaxa, and still thinks he can add the job of coaching Mexico's national soccer team.
Sanchez, who led the Spanish league in scoring five times, took over Necaxa on Sunday, according to the team's Web site.
The Mexican league team drew 1-1 with Pumas on Saturday _ its fifth game without a win. Necaxa (2-4-4) is in last place in Group 1.
``I saw the game against Pumas and the truth is I was enthused by the effort of the players,'' Sanchez said during The Play television program.
Despite taking over at Necaxa, Sanchez also repeated his desire to coach the national team.
``One thing isn't opposed to the other. It doesn't interfere with or affect the step to the national team in the least,'' Sanchez said.
The 48-year-old Sanchez, who replaces Enrique Lopez Zarza at Necaxa, retired as a player in 1997 after playing most of his career in Spain, where he scored 234 goals.
As a coach, Sanchez was 82-48-57 with Pumas _ the club with which he broke in as a player in 1976.
Necaxa also announced that Alex Aguinaga was named sports director. The Ecuadorean was one of the team's most popular players in the early 1990s, when Necaxa was still based in Mexico City.
