Juventus expecting reduction of point penalty from match fixing scandal

Juventus is expecting a ``substantial'' reduction of its points penalty from Italy's match-fixing scandal after presenting its case before an arbitration board Wednesday.

Juventus was stripped of its last two Serie A titles, demoted to Serie B and docked 17 points by a sports tribunal in July.

``We can expect a substantial reduction of the penalty,'' Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli said after the hearing, which lasted almost two hours.

Juventus is 4-0-1 through five games in Serie B and has minus-four points.

The hearing also featured a delegation from the Italian soccer federation.

``It went how we expected,'' Cobolli Gigli said. ``We are very confident, although I don't think the sentence will come until the end of the month.''

Fiorentina, Lazio and AC Milan escaped relegation but were docked points in Serie A _ 19 for Fiorentina, 11 for Lazio and eight for Milan.

Lazio and Milan requested that their penalties be annulled entirely.

``I think I was fairly convincing,'' Milan lawyer Leandro Cantamessa said.

Fiorentina will have its hearing Thursday.

The independent arbitration board, which was created by the Italian Olympic Committee, is the highest level of justice in Italian sports.
