Rodrigo Taddei scored one goal and set up another Sunday to help AS Roma beat Siena 3-1 and move into first place in the Serie A.
Taddei gave Roma the lead in the 47th minute against his former club, scoring from an angled shot from inside the area. In the 70th, he sent a cross to former Inter Milan midfielder David Pizarro, who scored from five metres.
Stefano Okaka, who came on for captain Francesco Totti in the 75th, scored Roma's third goal in injury time.
Also, David Di Michele scored twice to give Palermo a 2-1 win over Lazio and its third victory in seven days.
Roma and Palermo each have six points, but Roma leads on goal difference. Five clubs are tied for third with four points.
Cristiano Lucarelli's 58th-minute header gave Livorno a 1-0 win over Fiorentina in a Tuscan derby.
Also, Empoli drew 1-1 with visiting Chievo Verona; Catania was held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Atalanta; Udinese beat newly promoted Torino 2-0; and Ascoli, whose drew 1-1 against Messina.
Later Sunday, AC Milan played at Parma.
In Siena, the hosts were reduced to 10 men after midfielder Ezio Brevi was went off in the 27th minute for elbowing Daniele De Rossi in the face.
``We kept the ball well and dominated the middle of the field,'' Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. ``The elbow incident was unfortunate but these things happen from time to time.''
Mario Frick scored a consolation goal for Siena in the 87th.
Palermo forward Di Michele twice chipped Lazio goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi from just inside the penalty area after beating the offside trap at Stadio Olimpico.
The 30-year-old Di Michele's impressive performance came with Italy coach Roberto Donadoni watching from the stands.
Striker Tommaso Rocchi pulled one back for Lazio in the 73rd with an angled shot from Stefano Mauri's cross.
Palermo beat Reggina in its season opener last Sunday and West Ham in the first round of the UEFA Cup on Thursday.
Lucarelli's goal condemned Fiorentina to its second consecutive defeat. Fiorentina, which was docked 19 points for its part in Italy's match-fixing scandal, has yet to win this season and is in last place.
Ascoli goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca played his 571st game in Serie A, breaking Dino Zoff's record for appearances by a goalkeeper. Only AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini, with 583, has played more games.
Pagliuca, 39, made his Serie A debut in 1987 with Sampdoria. He also played for Inter Milan and Bologna.
On Saturday, defending champion Inter Milan drew 1-1 with visiting Sampdoria while Reggina beat visiting Cagliari 2-1.
Inter next faces title rival Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday. In the Italian Supercup, the traditional season opener, Inter beat Roma 4-3.
In Serie B, David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero scored to help Juventus beat Vicenza 2-1 and claim its first victory in the second division.
