Werder Bremen beat Bayern Munich 3-1 Saturday in a
battle of the Bundesliga's top two teams.
Brazilian midfielder Diego scored the first goal in the 11th
minute with a shot that went in off the crossbar and Pierre Wome
made it 2-0 in the 34th with a free kick.
Striker Roy Makaay pulled it back to 2-1 in the 37th after
connecting with Claudio Pizarro's pass. Bayern defender Lucio scored
an own-goal in the 61st.
Bremen, cheered on by more than 42,000 fans, attacked
relentlessly in the first 20 minutes.
``We planned to put our stamp on the match from the start and we
did just that,'' Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said. ``We attacked the
whole time and deserved to win.''
Bayern didn't have an attempt on goal until Makaay managed an
off-target shot in the 21st.
Bremen remains first on goal difference over Schalke with 16
points from eight rounds, while Bayern fell from second to fourth
with 13.
``We just made too many mistakes for a game between Bayern and
Bremen,'' Bayern defender Willy Sagnol said. ``I don't know what
happened.''
Diego's goal came after picking up a pass from Torsten Frings.
Diego went past Lucio to drive a shot into the goal off the
crossbar.
The 21-year-old Diego has been the most influential Bundesliga
newcomer this year.
``The difference between Bayern and Bremen right now is Diego,''
Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer said.
Wome become the 13th different player to score one of Bremen's 21
goals this season. No other team has more than 14.
Schalke controlled play against Hannover _ a team stuck in the
demotion zone _ and won 2-1. Zlatan Bajramovic scored in the 17th
and Levan Kobiashvili added a second 10 minutes later.
Jan Rosenthal scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 52nd for
Hannover.
``It's a good feeling to be on top of the table, but we had an
unsatisfactory performance in the second half,'' Schalke coach Mirko
Slomka said.
Stuttgart was held 1-1 by Wolfsburg as Mario Gomez gained a share
of the league scoring lead with his fifth goal.
Also, it was: Hertha Berlin 2, Borussia Moenchengladbach 1;
Arminia Bielefeld 1, Mainz 05 0; and Alemannia Aachen 1, Energie
Cottbus 2.
