Hamburger SV and Werder Bremen both
lost in the first round of the German Cup to third-division teams
Saturday.
Bremen, a five-time German Cup winner that meets Chelsea in the
Champions League on Tuesday, lost 4-2 in a penalty shootout to
Pirmasens. It was 1-1 after extra-time.
Bremen, which rested Germany internationals Tim Borowski, Torsten
Frings and Per Mertesacker with slight injuries, trailed before Ivan
Klasnic equalized in the 83rd.
Bremen captain Frank Baumann was ejected during extra time.
Hamburger SV lost 4-3 at Stuttgarter Kickers after trailing 2-0.
It then scored goals through Boubacar Sanogo, Danijel Ljuboja and
Guy Demel.
But Christian Okpala netted the equalizer in the 89th to send the
match into extra-time, and Recep Yildiz converted a penalty in the
96th.
Hamburg _ which was missing several injured players, including
Rafael van der Vaart and Juan Pablo Sorin _ plays Arsenal on
Wednesday in the Champions League.
