Lukas Podolski scored his first goal for Bayern
Munich in a 4-2 win over Hertha Berlin that took the team to equal
first in the Bundesliga.
Bayern has 13 points from seven games, along with Schalke and
Werder Bremen, which routed Bochum 6-0.
Podolski's 78th-minute breakaway goal stopped Hertha's resistance
after it had pulled back from 3-0 down to 3-2. Hertha had entered
the weekend unbeaten and atop the standings.
Bayern coach Felix Magath yielded to media pressure to start
Podolski _ voted the World Cup's best young player _ after the
forward scored twice for Germany on Wednesday.
``It was a good week,'' Podolski said. ``I've always said I have
fun playing football and I showed everybody again what I can do.''
Magath was rewarded in the ninth minute when Podolski's threaded
pass through six defenders set up Roy Makaay for an easy,
close-range goal in front of 69,000 fans at Allianz Arena.
Willy Sagnol scored in the 15th minute and Claudio Pizarro in the
53rd as Bayern took a 3-0 lead.
``In the first half we just had too much respect for our
opponents _ a team like Bayern will take advantage,'' Berlin coach
Falko Goetz said.
Berlin made it a game through Malik Fathi's 58th-minute header
and Marko Pantelic in the 73rd.
Pantelic nearly tied the game at 3-3 a few minutes later on a
breakaway, but chipped over the open goal.
Bremen leads on goal difference ahead of Bayern, with Schalke
third after a 2-1 win against Hamburger SV. Aachen and
Moenchengladbach are a point behind the leaders.
Bremen, the league's highest-scoring side, led 1-0 on forward
Aaron Hunt's seventh-minute goal, but wasted a dozen good chances.
Christian Schultz's 60th-minute volley started the rout against
the last-place team. Jurica Vranjes, Diego, Clemens Fritz and Naldo
scored afterward.
Schalke picked up its first away win and extended Hamburg's
club-record winless streak to 13 matches, including Champions League
and German Cup matches.
Schalke went ahead on Halil Altintop's 16th-minute goal, which
was set up twin brother Hamit. Hamburg's Piotr Trochowski levelled
at 1-1 in the 30th.
Hamburg's David Jarolim was ejected shortly before Marcelo Bordon
headed winner in the 53rd.
``Naturally, there is pressure on me, we are only one place above
bottom,'' Hamburg coach Thomas Doll said. ``It's important that the
boys experience a moment of success again.''
Moenchengladbach rallied to win 3-1 against Wolfsburg and is the
only team unbeaten in four home matches.
Moenchengladbach came back on scores by Peer Kluge, Oliver
Neuville and David Degen. American goalkeeper Kasey Keller made
several good saves.
``My team showed character after we fell behind,''
Moenchengladbach coach Jupp Heynckes said. ``Now I hope we can show
that in away matches.''
In other matches, it was: Stuttgart 3, Leverkusen 0; and Hannover
96 1, Frankfurt 1.
On Friday, Aachen beat Mainz 05 3-1.
