Nantes lost 1-0 at Nancy and Monaco slipped to a 3-1
home loss against Toulouse, leaving both defeated clubs still deep
in relegation trouble in the French league on Saturday.
Nantes, which succumbed to Mikael Chretien's goal in the 53rd
minute, is in last place with six points from 10 rounds. The win
improved third-place Nancy to 19 points.
Monaco is second-to-last on seven points and lost despite taking
an early lead through former Juventus striker Marco Di Vaio.
Strikers Bryan Bergougnoux and Johan Elmander replied and a late
goal from Achille Emana finished Toulouse's win, keeping it in
fourth place with 18 points.
Monaco and Nantes share eight league titles between them, while
Nantes has been in the top flight for the past 44 seasons, and
Monaco for 30 seasons.
Monaco coach Laszlo Boloni has not started the same 11 players
all season, and has yet to find a solution up front, where Czech
Republic striker Jan Koller has scored only once.
``No one thought we could fall this low,'' Monaco captain Gael
Givet told Saturday's edition of L'Equipe. ``I am scared of dropping
into the second division. We are already a quarter into the season
and we have yet to play a good match.''
At Lille, Mathieu Bodmer was fouled by defender Sylvain Marchal
in the 36th, and Bodmer converted the penalty for his fourth goal of
the season, and a 1-0 win over Lorient.
Coach Claude Puel's Lille improved to 17 points and fifth place,
and followed a 3-1 midweek Champions League win over AEK Athens.
Also on Saturday, it was: Rennes 1, Nice 0; Saint-Etienne 2, Le
Mans 0; Sedan 2, Lens 2; Sochaux 2, Bordeaux 1; and Valenciennes 3,
Troyes 1.
Lens took an early lead through Aruna Dindane's seventh goal of
the season, and Seydou Keita made it 2-0. But Sedan rallied and
Marcus Mokake levelled in injury time.
Saint-Etienne's win came courtesy of an own goal by Gregory
Cerdan and a second-half strike from forward Frederic Piquionne.
Sochaux won with goals from Slovenia's Valter Brisa and Brazil's
Alvaro Santos. Pierre Ducasse's injury-time penalty was little
consolation for Bordeaux.
At Valenciennes, Sebastien Roudet scored twice for the home side,
with Gael Sanz pulling a goal back for Troyes before Thomas Dossevi
added a third for Valenciennes.
Rennes secured successive wins thanks to a penalty from winger
Olivier Monterrubio.
On Sunday, unbeaten Lyon looks to move eight points clear at the
top when it travels to play Marseille, which is in second place and
hopes to trim Lyon's lead to two points.
Lyon will be missing midfielder Tiago with gastroenteritis, but
welcomes back captain Claudio Cacapa from a thigh injury which has
sidelined the Brazilian defender for two months.
Marseille will be missing defender Renato Civelli with a calf
strain, but striker Mickael Pagis could return to the lineup.
