Sunderland won its second game under manager Roy Keane on Wednesday, beating Leeds 3-0 to drop it into the League Championship relegation zone.
Liam Miller and Graham Kavanagh, both signed by the former Ireland and Manchester United midfielder, scored in the first half at Elland Road. Stephen Elliott added a third goal just after halftime.
Having started the season with four defeats, the Black Cats have now won three in a row to move up to halfway in the standings.
Leeds has lost three games at home in a row and is facing demotion to League One.
