Portsmouth swamps Middlesbrough 4 0

LONDON (AP) _ Portsmouth moved into second place in the English Premier League after beating Middlesbrough 4-0 behind two goals from Kwankwo Kanu on Monday.

The south coast club improved to seven points in three games, just two behind league-leading Manchester United.

Kanu made it 1-0 in the seventh minute, and Benjani Mwaruwari doubled the lead in the 50th. Kanu got his second seven minutes later and Svetoslav Todorov scored the final goal in second half injury time.

Middlesbrough, which upset Chelsea 2-1 five days earlier, posed almost no threat with a small crowd of 24,000 at the Riverside Stadium heading early to the exit gates.

The Monday game completed a full schedule of weekend matches.

On Saturday it was: Charlton 2, Bolton 0; Fulham 1, Sheffield United 0; Liverpool 2, West Ham 1; Tottenham 0, Everton 2; Watford 1, Manchester United 2; Wigan 1, Reading 0; Manchester City 1, Arsenal 0.

On Sunday: Aston Villa 2, Newcastle 0; Blackburn 0, Chelsea 2.
