Kevin Bond, who was fired as
Newcastle's assistant manager after being implicated in a bribery
investigation, was named manager of Bournemouth on Thursday.
Bond, who was a Bournemouth defender in the 1980s, replaces Sean
O'Driscoll, who quit to take over Doncaster last month. Bond's
contract with the third division team will run through the current
season.
Bournemouth, winless in six games, is 15th in the 24-team League
One.
Bond was fired by Newcastle on Sept. 26, a week after the
broadcast of a BBC investigation into corruption in English soccer.
The bribery allegations stem from when Bond was an assistant to
Harry Redknapp at Portsmouth.
``I know I haven't done anything wrong and you hope the people
who know you well, like the people at Bournemouth do, have the same
faith and disregard the negative stuff,'' Bond said. ``But it was in
the back of my mind and credit to the board at Bournemouth for not
taking any notice of all the hype.''
Bond denies the allegations made by the BBC's Panorama program
and plans legal action against Newcastle and the BBC.
Bond started his playing career at Bournemouth, where his father
was manager. He also played at Norwich, Manchester City, Southampton
and the Seattle Sounders.
