Middlesbrough signed Jonathan Woodgate on a season-long loan from Real Madrid and Robert Huth on a five-year deal from Chelsea on Wednesday.
``We have added two international defenders to our squad in one afternoon,'' Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said. ``That's a significant coup for Middlesbrough.''
Woodgate joined his hometown club as he bids to return from a long-term thigh injury. Since joining Real Madrid in 2004, he's played only 14 games.
Woodgate last played for Madrid in its Champions League defeat by Arsenal on Feb. 21. The financial terms of his loan deal were not disclosed.
Middlesbrough has the option to buy Woodgate, who has played five matches for England. He's also played for Leeds and Newcastle.
Huth, 22, joined in a six-million-pound ($12.67 million Cdn) transfer from Chelsea, the club he joined in February 2002 as a trainee. He played 21 games for Chelsea last season.
