Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell was fired Wednesday, with the club lodged 23rd in the 24-team League Championship.
Leeds came within one game of being promoted last season to the Premier League, losing a playoff to Watford.
But the club has won only one of eight league games this season. The final blow for Blackwell came Sunday when Sunderland, under new manager Roy Keane, beat Leeds 3-0 at home.
Blackwell has been in charge for 2{ years and inherited a club plagued by financial problems. Many top players have been sold to reduce the club's debt.
Leeds was relegated from the Premier League to the League Championship _ the division below _ after the 2003-2004 season. In 2001. the club reached the semifinals of the prestigious Champions League.
