Andy Johnson scored twice Saturday to help Everton
beat Liverpool 3-0 in the 204th Merseyside derby.
Tim Cahill scored the first goal in the 24th minute, taking a
cross from Lee Carsley and beating Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina
from six yards.
Liverpool nearly equalized soon after, with Everton goalkeeper
Tim Howard turning away Luis Garcia's drive and Steven Gerrard
hitting the post with the rebound.
Gerrard then curled a shot wide before Everton scored again.
Carsley crossed to new signing Johnson, who got past England
teammate Jamie Carragher in the 36th minute.
In the second half, Liverpool made some changes up front with
Dirk Kuyt replacing Peter Crouch and John Arne Riise coming in for
Robbie Fowler.
That reinvigorated the Reds and Gerrard had another shot go wide,
but Johnson added his second in the 90th when he headed in a rebound
after Carsley's first attempt was stopped by Reina.
Johnson, who has made four international appearances, played in
England's two European Championship qualifying matches.
