Diawara signs with Charlton

Charlton signed Senegal defender Souleymane Diawara to a four-year contract on Wednesday for 3.7 million pounds ($7.8 million Cdn).

``He's got great pace, big stature, good ability on the ball, and he's a very powerful defender who will be well suited to the Premier League,'' Charlton manager Iain Dowie said. ``We think he's a huge defensive addition to our squad.''

The 27-year-old central defender, who moved from French club Sochaux, has also played for Le Havre.
