Sao Paulo's Ecuadorean defender Neicer Reasco will miss the rest of the Brazilian national championship season after undergoing surgery on his left shin.
The defender was successfully operated on Tuesday by Dr. Rene Jorge Abdalla at the Hospital do Coracao in Sao Paulo, the club said.
Reasco injured his leg in Sao Paulo's Brazilian league match against Goias on Aug. 13. It was his debut with the three-time national champion, which acquired the defender from Liga de Quito in March but wasn't able to deploy him until after the World Cup in July.
The 29-year-player had returned to practice despite the injury, but team doctors opted for the operation after the tibia bone failed to heal properly.
Reasco is a regular in Ecuador's national team and made the final roster for the World Cup in Germany.
Sao Paulo leads the 20-team Brazilian league with 56 points from 28 matches. It hosts 10th-place Juventude on Saturday at Morumbi stadium in Sao Paulo.
