Joey Gjertsen's first half goal helped the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Atlanta Silverbacks 1-0 Sunday evening and end the club's USL season on a winning note.
With the win, the playoff-bound Whitecaps (12-6-10) finished fourth in the USL standings and will take on fifth-place Miami FC, led by former Brazil World Cup star Romario, in the first round of the playoffs.
The two-game, home-and-away aggregate goal series begins with Game 1 on Sept. 15 in Vancouver, followed by Game 2 in Miami on Sept. 17. The winner of the series will face the Montreal Impact in the semi-finals starting Sept. 22.
Gjertsen scored in the 37th minute after taking a ball on the run from David Testo, cutting in and blasting a shot from 22 yards that eluded Atlanta goalkeeper Shaun Kalnasy.
The goal was Gjertsen's 12th of the season and sixth in his last seven games.
