Toronto FC trades Canadian Serioux on heels of expansion draft

Toronto FC may have picked up 10 players in Friday's MLS expansion draft but the team's roster is still far from set.

Canadian Adrian Serioux became Toronto's first casualty.

Toronto FC head coach Mo Johnston kicked off what he promised to be a couple of days of wheeling and dealing by selecting the Houston Dynamo midfielder-defender in the expansion draft, then immediately traded him. Johnston sent the Toronto native, along with the team's first pick in the second round of the 2007 draft, to FC Dallas in exchange for midfielder Ronnie O'Brien.

Johnston admitted that six of the players selected were picked for their trade potential. The Toronto coach also took MLS all-time leading scorer and Real Salt Lake forward Jason Kreis, but admitted in a conference call Friday that Kreis may not be long for the Toronto team, as he was trying to swing a deal for the veteran striker.

Johnston also selected Paulo Nagamura (Los Angeles Galaxy), Danny O'Rourke (New York Red Bulls), Jose Cancela (New England Revolution), Nate Jaqua (Chicago Fire), Rod Dyachenko (D.C. United), Tim Regan (Chivas USA), Ritchie Kotschau (Columbus Crew) and Will Hesmer (Kansas City Wizards).

Toronto FC was allowed to pick one player from each team.

When the newcomers are finalized, they'll join Jim Brennan, a 29-year-old midfielder from Newmarket, Ont., who became Toronto FC's first player when he signed a multi-year deal with the club in September.

Johnston said he'll announce the signing of four Canadian international players next week.
