The Montreal Impact ended their USL regular
season with a 0-0 draw Friday night against the rival Toronto Lynx,
but could still lose in the standings.
With the tie, Montreal (14-5-9) sits in first place in the USL
first division standings, but has not clinched the regular season
title.
The Impact have 51 points, five points more than the Rochester
Raging Rhinos, but the Rhinos have two games in hand and can
leapfrog Montreal into first with wins in its last two games.
Montreal, by clinching at least second place, is guaranteed a bye
into the semifinals, which is an aggregate-goal two-game
home-and-away series that will take place Sept. 22 and 24.
Montreal had a golden opportunity to take the lead on a penalty
kick by forward Mauricio Salles in the 53rd minute, but Salles' low
shot was stopped by Toronto Lynx goalkeeper Theo Zagar.
The Lynx (7-12-8), though out of playoff contention, continued
its string of strong play in keeping the Impact off the scoresheet.
``Toronto played with more intensity than us,'' said Impact head
coach Nick De Santis. ``It's unacceptable to play that way at home.
We tried different combinations for the upcoming playoffs. We will
have time to regroup for the semi-finals.''
Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton earned his ninth shutout of the
season and ends the regular season with a goals against average of
.500.
``We gave away the win and now we will have to look at Rochester
to know if we clinch first place or not,'' said Sutton. ``On a
positive note, we did not allow a goal at home tonight. We will have
to work hard over the next two weeks to solidify our offence for the
playoffs.''
The tie helped Montreal set two new team records at home for most
shutouts in a season (10) and the least goals allowed in a season
(4). It also earned the club the Voyageurs Cup, awarded by Canadian
soccer fans to the top Canadian team in the USL first division.
