SHERBROOKE, Que. (CP) _ A pair of goals by Mauricio Salles gave the Montreal Impact a 2-0 win over the Virginia Beach Mariners on Sunday and ended the club's four-game winless streak.
With the win, the first place Impact improves to 13-5-8 for 47 points, seven points up on the Rochester Raging Rhinos in the USL first division standings.
The win also avenges a 1-0 loss to the Mariners on Friday on a late goal by Felix Brillant.
``We have too much character not to bounce back and that's what we did today,'' said Impact head coach Nick De Santis in a statement. ``I hope this will be the turning point of our season. It's an incredible win for team morale. It's good to see our forwards score and get good opportunities.''
Salles, the Impact's leading scorer with nine, scored in the 22nd and 69th minutes to pace the Impact attack.
``We worked hard to get a good result,'' said Salles. ``We worked as a team. We worked well during our training sessions and it showed today. We had the desire to win the game and the motivation was there.''
Impact and Canadian national team goalkeeper Greg Sutton stopped six shots to record his seventh shutout of the season.
The shutout continues the club's perfect record in games played in Sherbrooke, Que. Since 2004, Montreal has played and won all three of its games in the southern Quebec city by shutouts.
The Impact's next game is on Thursday against the Timbers in Portland, Ore.
