Christine Sinclair will lead Canadian team into Korean soccer tournament

Veteran Christine Sinclair will be captain of the Canadian women's team that will play in the inaugural Peace Queen Cup beginning next week in South Korea.

Sinclair, nominated as FIFA women's player of the year, leads a veteran lineup announced Friday by national team coach Even Pellerud.

``It's a huge honour,'' said the Burnaby, B.C., native about being named captain.

``I'm still young. There are definitely people more experienced than I am that help out with the leadership on this team. It's not like all the pressure is on me at this time.''

Also among the players named to the team is keeper Erin McLeod, defender Sasha Andrews and midfielder Amy Walsh. Ottawa Fury goalkeeper Leisha Alcia will also make the trip, looking to earn her first international cap.

The tournament will be staged Oct. 28 to Nov. 4 in the South Korean cities of Seoul, Cheonan, Suwon, Changwon, Masan and Gimhae.

Canada will play in Group A and face Italy on Oct. 28, South Korea on Oct. 30, and Brazil on Nov. 1. The championship match between the top teams in Group A and Group B will be played Nov. 4.

The tournament will be Canada's final matches before it enters the CONCACAF 2006 Women's Gold Cup where it will attempt to earn one of the region's direct berths to the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Sinclair replaces national team veteran Charmaine Hooper as captain.

The Canadian Soccer Association says Hooper, defender Sharolta Nonen and forward Christine Latham have been suspended from the national team for failing to play in a pair of exhibition games against China in August. The three have threatened a lawsuit over being axed from the squad.
