Boca Juniors joins San Lorenzo as leaders in Argentina's first division race

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) _ Rodrigo Palacio scored two goals as Boca Juniors beat Velez Sarsfield 3-1 on Sunday to join San Lorenzo for a share of first place in the Argentine Clausura tournament.

Unbeaten through its first eight outings, San Lorenzo fell by a 2-1 margin to Estudiantes in the ninth round of the championship. The first loss for San Lorenzo, which is now 7-1-1, means it shares 22 points with Boca Juniors. Boca leads the way on goal difference, while Estudiantes, last season's Abertura champ, held third place with 18 points.

Boca and its Buenos Aires archrival River Plate meet next Sunday.

River, after drawing 1-1 with Belgrano de Cordoba on Sunday, lags back in the pack with Argentinos Juniors as both share fourth place at 16 points.

In other matches, Gimnasia of Jujuy drew 1-0 with Racing Club on Friday. Saturday's matchups featured Argentinos Juniors drawing 1-1 with Quilmes, but another match in which Nueva Chicago was leading Banfield 2-1 had to be suspended in the 29th minute for a power outage affecting the stadium lights.

Elsewhere, Gimnasia of La Plata beat Independiente 4-1 and Colon of Santa Fe defeated Newell's Old Boys 3-1. Arsenal drew 0-0 with Lanus and Godoy Cruz went up 2-1 over Rosario Central.
