Ryan Benesch, captain of the Kitchener-Waterloo Braves of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. A league, was the No. 1 pick in the National Lacrosse League entry draft by the San Jose Stealth on Wednesday night.
Benesch scored 42 goals and assisted on 39 in 22 OLA games this summer.
San Jose acquired the first spot in the drafting order on Tuesday when GM John Mouradian traded American forward Ryan Boyle, the 2005 NLL rookie of the year, to the expansion New York Titans.
In their No. 2 slot, the Stealth then selected big defenceman Kyle Sorenson, who just helped the OLA's Peterborough Lakers win the Canadian junior championship.
Brett Bucktooth, a First Nations star at Syracuse University, was taken third by the Buffalo Bandits.
Geoff Snider of Calgary, who starred at the University of Denver and who was the MVP of the world field tournament won by Canada in July in London, Ont., was taken fourth by the Philadelphia Wings.
